  • When shooting in Cine EI, you are always recording at the native base ISO setting and either over or under exposing the image to your taste. When shooting in Cine EI, I recommend shooting S-Gamut3.Cine/Slog3 to get the best results in post-production.

  • The larger on-camera battery, I forget the technical name for it, seemed to keep the camera powered for quite most of a full day. Go with the bigger batteries for peace of mind or a small V-Mount, or Gold-Mount, rear adapter plate. One can never go badly with better batteries.

  • When shooting CineEI and Log, you can use LUT in S&Q mode when recording 4K up to 60fps. Any faster than that and you have to go to HD, and you can’t separate the LUT between monitoring and baking it in to the file.

  • So the Canon offers interchangeable lens mounts, 5.9K recording and internal Cinema Raw Light. The Sony is 4K only with no internal Raw options, but does have higher frame rates and costs significantly less. You pay your money and take your choice....

  • Other than the full frame it has a few key features. First up is superb autofocus, although the camera lacks a touch screen LCD which would help things a lot with operation. Canon did this with the C300 Mk II back in the day too.

  • The FX9 does offer in-camera image stabilisation, but it does this using a built-in gyroscope that records metadata for every shot, then post-production takes out the shakes.

  • There is also Face Detection with Face Only, which only focuses when it sees a face. Face Priority focuses all the time, but gives priority to any face it detects. Up to eight faces can be detected, and you can select which one to stay with via the toggle switch.

  • On the FS7 Mark II, the clear ND setting left the sensor totally exposed, but on the FX9 there is a clear filter. So there is no change in backfocus when changing from clear to any other ND filter.

    Pro Moviemaker
  • Electronic Variable ND filter and you can switch between stepped ND stops or variable ND. You can also use auto ND, too, which uses the camera’s autoexposure to tweak the ND amount, allowing you to keep your shutter speed and aperture constant for a consistent look.

  • When Sony designed the FX9, they took a lot from what they'd learned making the Sony FS7. The Sony FX9 has a full-metal body making it very sturdy.

  • The FX9 has an all-new touchpad system, giving a simple but efficient way to navigate the camera. It also has ten customizable buttons for your favorite settings.

  • Sony also went back to using the classic Sony E-mount rather than the Sony NEX mount on the FS7. They improved the weatherproofing, making it even handier as an "on-the-go" video camera.

  • The FX9 is compatible with most of the accessories released for the FS7, so you can more or less use the same equipment you've always been using.

  • Speaking of accessories, there are a ton for the FX9 that you can get to improve your filming experience. The modular design is great for filmmakers who have specific needs, as you can modify it to fit perfectly for you!

  • The Sony PXW FX9 has an incredible 15 stops dynamic range with its 6K sensor. However, the camera only captures at 4K, but it's an incredible 4K at 60p. The camera even allows 120-180fps recording at 2K for great slow-motion footage.

  • The sensor provides the camera with some excellent low-light performance, even better than the one on the FS7. The ISO performance is enhanced due to the 6K nature of the full-frame sensor.

  • You can set how much image stabilisation you want and the resolution of cropped 4K footage, which gives incredible steadiness. However, you have to use Sony’s Catalyst Browse/Prepare software to do it. Hopefully other editing programmes will offer support shortly.

  • However, all this AF technology works best with native Sony E-mount lenses. Many shooters use Canon EF glass with adapters, which isn’t optimal. Some adapters don’t allow AF, and other work but not to the same extent as Sony glass.

  • However, at launch the camera can only record 4K internally at 30p full-frame or 60p with a Super 35 crop. And 120fps slow motion is in either 2K full-frame or with a firmware upgrades will enable 180fps in FHD, and 120fps in 4K with a Super 35 crop when recorded externally.

  • There’s no image stabilization, no tracking autofocus and its stills capabilities are rudimentary in the extreme.

    TechRadar
  • We say 'relative user-friendliness' because the Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro is certainly not designed for newbies or non-enthusiasts and skips many of the features you’d expect from a Sony, Panasonic, Canon or Fujifilm mirrorless camera.

    TechRadar
  • That said, upgrading from the older 6K isn’t necessarily a good idea. The sensor and image quality are exactly the same, so unless you really want those extra features it’s probably not worth the extra outlay.

    TechRadar
  • Don’t be fooled by the name: the Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro won’t be fitting in any of your pockets (unless you exclusively wear harem pants, perhaps).

    TechRadar
  • Not intended for beginners

    TechRadar
  • No real stills capability

    TechRadar
  • In addition, Blackmagic hasn’t improved the autofocus on the 6K Pro. That means there’s zero continuous autofocus while filming video, and the autofocus – which can be activated with a long-press of the touch-display or the autofocus button – is clumsy by comparison to that...

    Trusted Reviews
  • The older Pocket Cinema Camera 6K had a fixed rear screen, while the Pro model tilts – just as everyone else goes to fully articulating screens.

    Digital Camera World
  • It’s not a small camera!

    Digital Camera World
  • No continuous AF, AE or IBIS

    Digital Camera World
  • The 6K Pro now uses Sony-fit NP-F batteries and also accepts an optional £138 battery grip that screws onto the bottom plate, once you remove a blanking plate there. This allows for two batteries, but makes the camera even bigger.

    Digital Camera World
  • There is 120fps slow-motion in 2.8K 17:9 Raw or in HD ProRes scaled from 2.7K. The crop in 120fps in 3.388x, which is a huge amount. It might work for you in shooting some sport or wildlife, though, as it gives your lenses a huge reach but at the expense of image quality.

    Digital Camera World
  • One issue around the older 6K camera was battery life from its Canon LP-E6 cells and you’d definitely need to carry a pocketful of them for day’s shooting day.

    Digital Camera World
  • It now takes Sony-spec batteries which can be bought in larger capacities, but it’s still power-hungry and you should buy a few – even if you use the battery grip. The camera can be trickle charged by the USB-C socket but only if you’re not using it to record to an external SSD.

    Digital Camera World
  • With the exact same sensor as the PCC 6K, the 6K Pro doesn’t represent a huge leap forward in pure image quality.

    Stuff
  • The Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro is even chunkier than its two Pocket Cinema Camera brethren, making it the third model in the three-strong Pocket Cinema Camera series to be far too large to fit in anyone’s pocket – save anyone wearing parachute pants or clown trews.

    Stuff
  • The only problem is, you have to actually be able to see the frame. On Pocket 4K and 6K, you’d have to crouch, contort, or otherwise get a ladder to get those more extreme angles.

    No Film School
  • While there’s nothing inherently disproportionate with the design, and it’s fine for most circumstances, it’s widely accepted that the camera’s bulky handgrip and weight distribution doesn’t make the camera that handy for use with gimbals without additional counterbalance tools.
