Of course, there are reasons to shoot in 12K, such as the enormous amount of scope for cropping if you are making a film in 4K or HD. It’s also good for extending the life of your footage for when 8K and above becomes the norm.

The sensor is CMOS but not using the typically Bayer formation which is biased towards green and requires that the colours have to be carefully combined for natural colour. Blackmagic’s new 12K sensor has equal sampling of red, green and blue for more balanced, film-like colours.

Raising the resolution to 12K and focusing on the wall still produced a subtle moiré. With the handheld, shooting is best at a T2.8 or wider to keep the wall completely out of focus and keeping the camera farther from the LED wall.

Being the only camera capable of 12K, the popular selling point is the ability to “punch-in” and keep a high resolution.

For our use (and the student’s) this is a superior feature. If you’re locked into a very narrow depth of field, that limits your options—something we’ve lived with using the other cameras.
