The face pad is thick and good for napping while you're adventuring with your little passenger. It is removable and can be washed, which is good for spit-up and drool.

The shoulder straps and load lifters are easy to use and can be adjusted on the fly. The waistband is also easy to adjust with forward-pull straps and micro-adjustments that change how well the Vari-flex system works.

The child seat moves up and down and can be done with your child in the seat with relative ease. The lift lever is under the face pad and moves smoothly. The child harness is also easy to move, and the clips work well.

The Deuter Pro has a significant amount of storage that rivals several carriers in our baby backpacks lineup. The Pro has space for almost everything, with various pockets and a separate day pack.

Lots of nice little touches

The Poco Plus prioritizes child safety, with a five-point harness, safety buckles, and structured cockpit that keeps them secure during outings or even the occasional stumble.

It’s comfortable on the wearer’s hips, shoulders, and back, easy to adjust on-the-fly, and has a ton of storage for all the daily essentials that come with hiking with kids.

The lightweight aluminum frame on the Osprey Poco Plus provides a stable platform to set the child carrier down. When loading the Poco Plus, the integrated kickstand is sturdy and easy to deploy (an audible click lets you know it's in place).

The kickstand on this pack works well and creates a sturdy base for taking the pack off though little ones should not be left unattended in any pack to avoid them pushing up and tipping the pack over.

Officially, the Poco Plus child carrier weighs 7.89 pounds, but trust me, even when you’re baby is settled right in, it feels so much lighter. How come? The Osprey Poco Plus comes with smart weight distribution, and that’s why it is perfect for a long hiking trip.

The new seat height is only adjusted from the front but is easily done with a child in the seat. The adjustments are easy to identify, are under the drool pad, and move without any trouble.

The Sapling Elite offers a lot by way of features for passenger comfort.

The Elite has a stable cockpit for passengers and testers were even able to jog with the pack on without too much disturbance for the passenger.

The supportive side straps on the Elite can be tightened with a child in the seat. This feature makes it easier to secure passengers and prevents excessive flopping around inside the cockpit.

The passenger shoulder straps are soft and adjust between the frame and the headrest. The seat bottom is firm but padded well for passenger comfort. You can adjust both the seat and harness with your child in the pack, which is convenient and useful in most circumstances.

The Elite has similar stirrups to the previous non-Elite backpack; feet fit inside easily and they can be adjusted for height or passenger comfort. This pack is one of the few options we've seen that comes with a canopy.

The Elite is very comfortable for the wearer with multiple adjustment points and unique features for an ergonomic fit for most wearers. These features include adjustments you can make while wearing the pack with your baby in place.

The Elite includes comfort-related adjustments that you won't find on the competition. These features give you a custom fit that can improve the wearer's comfort as the day progresses.

This backpack has a breathable back with a padding design that provides support but allows airflow for breathability.

The Sapling Elite has a torso adjustment strap that is easy to move and stays in place without shifting. This feature helps the pack fit parents of different sizes better than competitors without torso adjustment options. There are 4-adjustment options over 6 inches.

This pack has enough features for child comfort that most passengers should be able to rest easily while heading out for an outing.

This pack has a removable face rest/drool pad (above left) that attaches with snaps (above right) and has a slight slant for better napping. It seems to be a good angle for napping.

The harness has padded straps that have a cover to avoid direct contact with the hard plastic connectors.

The chest clip helps bring the shoulder straps together for a better fit and draws the cockpit closer to the back of the wearer, making it more comfortable to carry. The clip is easy to operate one-handed, and the strap moves smoothly.

The back of the pack is contoured and padded in strategic places for overall comfort and airflow, with a design better suited for preventing a sweaty back than those without this type of structure.

This Kelty has adjustable stirrups that can increase comfort for older children, so their legs don't have to dangle. While not all passengers will want to use them, we think it is nice to have them.

The Elite is one of the easier packs to use, giving it one of the highest scores in the group.

The Kelty is relatively lightweight, with dual handles on the front and back of the pack. An empty pack can be carried using either handle or both.
